Our Rude Onion Love

By Z-Jay’s Band A Love Song For Edie – Funny Song 🙂

This one’s for you Lord Pondicherry!

My love for you is like the most rude onion,
Your face reminds me of intelligent spiders,
Together, we are like muffins and pepper.

Oh darling Edie,
My rude onion,
My intelligent carrot,
The perfect companion to my muffins soul.

Roses are red,
Oceans are blue,
I like sand beneath her feet,
But not as much as I love acting with you!

Oh darling Edie,
Your hairs are like funny petals on a autumn day,
You’re like the most brave politician to ever walk The High Street.

Your intelligent spider face,
Your pepper soul,
Your funny hairs,
Your brave politician being…

How could I look at another when our rude onion love is so strong?

I love you Lord Pondicherry!

Success and Failure

SUCCESS ~ FAILURE —-

Spiritual unfoldment takes place through experience of such opposites as pleasure and pain, success and failure, virtue and vice. Both extremes are equally necessary for the fulfillment of life although they appear to be direct opposites of each other. In fact, from a larger point of view, the opposites of experience turn out to be complementaries rather than contraries. They appear to be clashing incompatibles only for the mind that cannot transcend them.

The opposites of failure and success need each other. There can be no success unless there is failure; and it is equally true that there can be no failure unless there is success. If one has never succeeded in a particular thing, it is meaningless to style such attempts or their results as failure. In the same way, success is success only if there have been prior failures, either by that particular person or by others who tried in the same field.

Success and failure are generally measured, appreciated or suffered more in relation to what has been achieved in the same field by others, than in relation to a target which has been hit or missed. If it is usual for any person to do a particular thing, the doing of it is not to be regarded as a success, although it is success in the sense that what was planned has been achieved.

In every worldly sphere there is bad, worse and worst, as well as good, better and best. There is a conscious or unconscious racing with each other, as well as a perception of that which is beyond all racing. It is out of this racing that success or failure arises.

10 Things That Happen To Your Body If You Walk Every Day
*LIFE STORY
On Aug 8, 2018

You’ll be shocked to learn what happens to your body just from walking daily.

The real question is, do you have an extra 15 to 30 minutes free every day? Within a 24 hour period, anyone has a half an hour to spare. What should you do with that time? Walk of course. There are too many benefits and good things that come with that 30-minute walk. It is the cheapest and one of the most effective ways to do your whole body good.

Brain changes for the better
There has been a study done showing the effects of walking on the brain. According to this study, endorphins increase and stress levels become significantly lowered. Lower impact exercises like walking also aid in the overall brain health and even reduce the percentage of Alzheimer’s and dementia.

Enhanced vision

It may sound fishy, but apparently walking every day can benefit the eyes as well. Walking improves some eye pressure thus reducing glaucoma in some cases.

Keeping the heart strong

Walking is just as useful as running according to the American Heart Association. It can help in avoiding heart related issues like strokes or other heart related issues. It improves circulation, reduction in cholesterol and can stabilize blood pressure.

Larger lungs

Besides eliminating toxins in the body, walking improves the lungs by coaching them to have more oxygen flowing throughout the body. This can greatly impact lung function for the prevention in lung diseases.

Improving the pancreas

A study was done that showed people who only walked had better glucose levels than those who ran 6 times as much. This means that people can practically walk their way to preventing diabetes and walking is the better option over running.

Aiding in digestion

Balancing the gut for better gut health is vital to prevent colon cancers and other problems like flatulence and constipation. Walking can help normalize the colon by keeping the colon literally moving.

Leaner muscles

When a person loses fat in their body the muscles become more prominent and they become leaner. This can be achieved by taking 10,000 steps a day. Going uphill or adding an interval throughout the walk can increase muscle tones to different parts of the body as well. All of that can be marked as you working out at the gym for the day. Walking is much easier on the body so there is less soreness and no healing time which means more continuous walking.

Firm joints and bones
Feeling stiff and in pain can be hampered by walking 30 minutes everyday. Stronger joints, warding off injuries and even ruling out bone loss are great ways to keep your body healthy. The Arthritis Foundation recommends walking for a healthier and being comfortable in your own body.

Relieve back pain

Much higher impact sports or exercises can damage the back. However, lower impact exercises like walking can relieve back pain and aches by circulating the blood within the spinal area. This along with strengthening flexibility and posture can practically erase any back discomfort.

Balanced mind
Walking by yourself but with others can improve mood, lower stress or anxiety. It has even been known to reduce depression in people.

Pass this along to your friends to teach them the benefits of walking!

10 Of The Weirdest Things The Chinese Government Has Banned

10 Of The Weirdest Things The Chinese Government Has Banned

OLIVER TAYLOR

Censorship is a big deal in China, where the government has made it clear that it will go to any length to control information. The Chinese government strictly controls news spread through the Internet and mass media, consequently deciding what its citizens know and what they do not.

Several Western companies—including Google and Facebook—have either left or been banned in China over censorship and privacy issues, leaving Chinese-owned companies that the government can easily manipulate in their place.

Away from the Internet, China has also banned several other weird things—usually for ridiculous reasons. Although the government often says otherwise, most of the items on this list were banned for political reasons.

10Hip-Hop

Hip-hop songs and hip-hop artists with tattoos are prohibited in China. The ban was issued through the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television (SAPPRFT), which stated that hip-hop artists had refused to toe the line of the ruling Chinese Communist Party (CCP).

SAPPRFT ruled that media agencies must not feature artists who use vulgar or “tasteless” lyrics and artists whose “heart and morality” differ from that of the ruling CCP. Additionally, the artists must neither be classless nor questionable.[1]

Weeks before the ban was issued, two popular Chinese hip-hop artists, Wang Hao (stage name “PG One”) and Zhou Yan (stage name “GAI”) had been sanctioned for what the government called “bad behavior” and use of lyrics that were not aligned with the ideology of the CCP. PG One was also accused of using lyrics that insulted women and promoted drug use.

9Time Travel

Films and television shows depicting time travel have been disallowed in China since April 2011. The government stated that the ban was necessary because movies depicting time travel are often historically inaccurate and filled with feudalism, superstition, and reincarnation, all of which are capable of distorting and insulting the history of China.

The ban came at a time when time travel films were gaining popularity. Their plots often involved people teleporting from modern China to ancient China. The events in the fictional ancient China were usually modeled after real events that happened in ancient China but with some exaggerations. The government fears that this could alter citizens’ opinions of the past.[2]

8Celebrity Gossip

Around June 8, 2017, several Chinese blogs and social media accounts that were focused on celebrity gossip mysteriously disappeared from the Chinese web. It was later revealed that they had been shut down on the orders of the government. Apparently, the government had called representatives of several big Chinese Internet companies to a meeting and had given them a list of 60 blogs and social media accounts it wanted shut down.

According to the government, the ban was necessary because the blogs and social media accounts were of “poor taste” and did not promote “socialist values.” The shutdown was surprising to many Internet users because the government had often left sports and entertainment news uncensored.[3]

7Reincarnation

China has banned reincarnation. That is, people who claim to be back from the dead. Anyone who wants to be reincarnated or claims to have been reincarnated needs to seek approval from the government and follow the rules as listed by the Chinese State Administration for Religious Affairs.

Despite its hilariousness, the prohibition has very real religious and political undertones. It is targeted at all Tibetan Buddhists, specifically the Dalai Lama, the spiritual and political leader of the Tibetan people and followers of Tibetan Buddhism.

Tibet used to be an independent country. Then, over five decades ago, China invaded and added the country to its territory. The Dalai Lama fled Tibet for India, where he still holds sway over Tibetans.

They believe that the Dalai Lama is capable of reincarnation after death. Considering that the current Dalai Lama is already old, a successor is bound to be appointed within the next few years or decades. By controlling who can be reincarnated, China will be able to decide who becomes the Dalai Lama. When this happens, it will be able to bring all Tibetans and Tibetan Buddhists under state control.

Even if the Dalai Lama decides to be reincarnated among Tibetans outside China (maybe in India or the United States), China could refuse to recognize that Dalai Lama. It could even appoint another Dalai Lama from the Tibetan population in China, leaving Tibetans with two Dalai Lamas. This will inevitably cause disagreement and confusion among Tibetans.[4]

6Puns

No pun intended, puns are banned in China. They are commonly used on the Chinese Internet and media where Chinese words, characters, phrases, and idioms are slightly adjusted to give them different meanings. The government claimed that the ban was necessary because puns eroded Chinese culture and could mislead people (especially kids) or cause what it called “cultural and linguistic chaos.”[5]

However, it is known that the ban was not intended to preserve Chinese culture or prevent whatever the government meant by “cultural and linguistic chaos.” Rather, it was intended to stop Internet users from using puns to bypass Internet censorship and mock the government.

5‘I Disagree’

In March 2018, the China National People’s Congress voted to expunge the law that limited the president’s rule to two five-year terms. This is believed to be the first step in President Xi Jinping’s attempt to rule China for life. The government had kept all preparations under wrap and only hinted of the proposed amendment two weeks earlier.

Some citizens opposed the proposed amendment and openly criticized it on social media. Many compared China to North Korea and used the phrase “I disagree” to show their disapproval. That continued until the government banned the phrase. Internet users who made posts containing “I disagree” got an error message in return.[6]

Besides “I disagree,” the government also banned ”migration,” “boarding a plane,” “life-long rule,” “long live the emperor,” and Animal FarmAnimal Farm is the name of the popular novel by George Orwell, while “boarding a plane” is similar to a Chinese phrase meaning “ascending the throne”—as in Xi Jinping was trying to become king.

4Winnie-The-Pooh

The Chinese government banned Winnie-the-Pooh after it realized that its citizens were comparing the fictional character to President Xi Jinping. Due to Internet censorship, Chinese citizens are unable to use certain words on the Internet. So they often find creative ways to bypass censorship and use these words. One method is by using different words or characters to represent people and events. For President Xi Jinping, it was Pooh.

When a picture of Xi Jinping shaking hands with Shinzo Abe, Japan’s prime minister, surfaced on the Internet, Chinese citizens responded with pictures of Pooh shaking hands with Eeyore the donkey. When another picture showing Xi Jinping popping his head out of his presidential limousine surfaced, the people responded with a picture of Pooh popping his head out of a toy car.

The ban was not the first time that pictures of Pooh were prohibited on the Chinese Internet. Earlier, a ban came because the Chinese Communist Party was preparing for a congress and there were concerns that more questionable pictures of Pooh might pop up.[7]

3Livestreaming

China disallowed livestreaming after realizing that it could not be censored like other online content. This wasn’t the reason the government gave, though. They stated that the prohibition was necessary to clean the Chinese Internet. The ban was issued in June 2017 and was targeted at Sina Weibo, China’s equivalent of Twitter, and Ifeng and AcFun, two video sharing sites similar to YouTube.

Livestreaming was gaining popularity at the time of the ban and involved unusual technologies that the government was not used to censoring. For instance, in 2016, Ifeng livestreamed the US presidential election, something the Chinese government would not have ordinarily allowed. So they just instituted the ban while they worked on censorship.[8]

2‘N’

The letter “n,” the innocent 14th letter of the English alphabet, was another unfortunate victim of China’s censorship. The ban came after China announced its plans to remove the two-term limit for president.

In mathematics, the Chinese use the letter “n” the same way we use the letter “x.” So “n” stands for unknown or infinity. Chinese citizens were using the letter to denote the number of years that Xi Jinping will remain in power. However, the government probably realized that the letter “n” had other uses and lifted the ban a day later.[9]

1Religion

China categorizes itself as an atheist nation. Although it prefers that its citizens remain atheists, the government claims to allow freedom of religion. However, serving and retired members of the ruling Chinese Communist Party are banned from having a religion. They cannot get involved in religious activities and are expected to act against certain religions like the Falun Gong, which the government categorizes as an evil cult.

The so-called freedom of religion is a sham because the state strictly regulates religions, decides how they operate, and bans them when it suspects they are acting against its goals. The government also regulates religious books, traditions, and methods and places of worship. It does not hesitate to ban them when necessary. For instance, churches require state approval to operate.[10]

The government also holds a monopoly over the distribution of Bibles, determines who becomes a church leader, and regulates Christian holidays. The government used to be lax about its monopoly over the distribution of Bibles until recently. Then it started clamping down on the online sales of Bibles.

China does not allow the Vatican to independently appoint Catholic bishops in their country, either. Rather, the government negotiates with the Vatican to determine who can become a bishop. At one time, the Chinese government even banned Christmas.

Muslims are not treated any better. The government has banned Muslim names, dress styles, and traditions. Muslim women cannot wear burkas, and men cannot have beards. Parents cannot give their children Islamic names, either.

In 2017, China banned Muslim civil servants from fasting during Ramadan, the Islamic month when Muslims are expected to fast. It even stationed guards at government buildings all day and night to ensure that the ban was enforced.

The government also demanded that students in Muslim-majority regions watch communist films and engage in sports on Fridays, just to stop them from fasting and participating in joint community prayers that are held on Fridays. China also has strict guidelines to determine who performs hajj, an annual pilgrimage to Mecca, Saudi Arabia. The government demands that any Muslim who wants to make the hajj pilgrimage must be between 50 and 70 and must pledge allegiance to the government.

How to Become a Professional Sleeper (Career Path)

How to Become a Professional Sleeper (Career Path)
Joanna Zambas

Is your morning alarm usually followed by 15-20 snoozes? Do you find getting out of bed every morning extremely difficult? And do you crawl through work each day at work, dreaming about home-time and climbing back into bed for some much-need beauty sleep?

If this sounds a lot like your dream job, keep reading to find out all you need to know about becoming a professional sleeper!

1. Research the Profession
You know you want to sleep all day (don’t we all?) but what you really need to know is what your working hours will be, how much you’ll get paid and what skills you need to meet the requirements for the job.

Job Description
Quite simply, a professional sleeper is someone who gets paid to sleep. They generally do this as part of scientific research where scientists analyse their sleep patterns or to evaluate the quality of various sleep-related products.

Although your day-to-day duties will vary, you’ll be expected to:

test mattresses, pillows and quilts
write detailed reports on comfort, room lighting, feelings and noise disruption
occasionally take sleep aids that will help you fall asleep for medical trials
take sleeping pills to remain still for art exhibitions.
Essential Skills and Qualities
In order to succeed in this exciting career path, you’ll need:

the ability to sleep in new surroundings, away from home for long periods of time
the ability to sleep with wires attached to you, knowing that people will be watching you
good overall health and fitness
excellent communicationand interpersonal skills
the ability to write compelling and interesting reports
good observational skills
a strong character and not be bothered about spending a lot of time secluded from others
strong organisational skills
Working Hours and Conditions
Sleeping on the job might not be all it’s hyped up to be, as contracts for professional sleepers aren’t known for being consistent, which is typical for all types of freelance work. In other words, this isn’t your typical 9-to-5 job.

Mattress and sleep testers will generally need to sign up to a number of different studies and will need to manage their diary to ensure no two jobs clash. Certain studies can last between 24 hours to 2 months, so there’s no telling how long you will need to spend away from home.

Employers should be able to guarantee you a safe working environment – you’ll either work/sleep in test centres, hospital or even luxury hotels, and there will always be a medical professional close by if needed.

Salary Prospects
As the length and duties of each job vary, it’s difficult to set an average salary.

That said, NASA paid volunteers $18,000 (£13,250) to lie in bed for 70 days back in 2013, while one study at the University of Colorado offered to pay subjects up to $2,730 (£2,010) to participate in a 14-17 sleep study.

In 2006, meanwhile, budget hotel chain Travelodge hired Wayne Munnelly into their newly created Director of Sleep position. He was offered a £60,000 salary to sleep in every single one of the chain’s 17,000 rooms and evaluate lighting, noise, cleanliness and overall comfort.

Roisin Madigan, a student from Manchester, was paid £1,000 a day to sleep in designer beds for a month, while the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York City offered subjects $10 (£7.30) an hour to take sleeping pills and sleep on bed in the middle of the museum as part of a Chu Yun exhibit.

Pros and Cons
Pros include:

you’ll get paid to sleep (could this possibly be the best job in the world?!)
you’ll get to learn more about your own sleeping patterns
you’ll receive medical treatment for any problems detected
studies aren’t continuous and if you walk out midway, you still get paid for the days you participated in the study
if you’re a mattress tester, you’ll get to stay in luxury hotels and enjoy five-star treatment – for free!
Cons include:

you’ll need to make some lifestyle changes – for example, you won’t be allowed caffeine, alcohol, vitamins, etc or you’ll be asked to drink/eat certain things as part of the study
you may spend a long time indoors and will begin to feel out of touch with the outside world
you’ll spend long periods of time away from family and friends
you won’t have a regular source of income
you may have to wait up to a month to be allowed to participate in another test

2. Get the Qualifications
There are no specific qualifications required to become a professional sleeper or mattress/quilt tester. However, you do need to be at least 18 years of age and will need to fit a variety of criteria for the study. This will vary from job to job, but you’ll usually need to be in good health and willing to provide your full health history and, in some cases, even the medical history of your entire family.

For some studies (ie: those that test sleeping pills), you may need to suffer from insomnia or generally be someone who has difficulty sleeping at night. Additionally, you’ll need to have a flexible working schedule as projects can take place at any time of the day.

3. Land Your First Job
Landing your first job as a sleep tester isn’t as straightforward as other, more conventional professions.

You will need to keep an eye out for adverts online – many people find opportunities on sites like Craigslist and university websites. You could also set up a Google Alert for when sleep testing positions open up so you can be the first to be notified.

Alternatively, you could contact mattress companies and hotels directly, and pitch your sleep testing services. You could also set up your own blog, in hopes that you’ll get noticed by big companies who are looking for professional sleep testers.

4. Develop Your Career
There isn’t much scope for career development in this field but if you’re smart, you can save a lot of money by taking part in high-paying studies. You’ll even learn more about your personal skills and qualities while you’re at it. This will, ultimately, give you time and funding to invest in your hobby and turn it into a full-time income source!

Do you think you have what it takes to become a professional sleeper? Let us know your thoughts on this dreamy gig in the comments section below…

Retired husband – Humour

RETIRED HUSBAND

(I love this guy)😂😉

(Courtesy: a friend on WhatsApp)

After I retired, my wife insisted that I accompany her on her trips to the Hypermarket.

like most men, I found shopping boring and preferred to get in and get out.

my wife is like most women – loves to browse & leaves me with endless time to fulfill.

Yesterday my dear wife received the following letter,

from the local Hypermarket:

Dear Mrs. Harris:

Over the past six months, your husband has caused quite a commotion, in our store.

We cannot tolerate this behavior and have been forced to, ban both of you from the store.

Our complaints against your husband, Mr. Harris, are listed below and are documented by our video surveillance cameras:

1. June 15: He took 24 boxes of condoms and randomly put them in other people’s carts when they weren’t looking.

 2. July 2: Set all the alarm clocks in Housewares to go off at 5-minute intervals.

3. July 7: He made a trail of tomato juice on the floor leading to the women’s restroom.

 4. July 19: Walked up to an employee and told her in an official voice,

‘Code 3 in House wares. Get on it right away’.

This caused the employee to leave her assigned station and receive a reprimand from her Supervisor that in turn resulted with a union grievance, causing management to lose time; and costing the company money. We don’t have a Code 3.

5. August 4: Went to the Service Desk and tried to put a bag of M&Ms on layaway.

6. August 14: Moved a, ‘CAUTION – WET FLOOR’ sign to a carpeted area.

7. August 15: Set up a tent in the camping department and told the children shoppers he’d invite them in if they would bring pillows and blankets from the bedding department to which twenty children obliged.

8. August 23: When a clerk asked if they could help him he began crying and screamed, ‘Why can’t you people just leave me alone?’

EMTs were called.

9. September 4: Looked right into the security camera and used it as a mirror while he picked his nose.

10. September 10: While handling guns in the hunting department, he asked the clerk where the antidepressants were.

11. October 3: Darted around the store suspiciously while, loudly humming the, ‘Mission Impossible’ theme.

12. October 6: In the auto department, he practiced his, ‘Madonna Look’ using different sizes of funnels.

13. October 18: Hid in a clothing rack and when people browsed through, yelled ‘PICK ME! PICK ME!’

14. October 22: When an announcement came over the loud speaker, he assumed a fetal position and screamed;

‘OH NO! IT’S THOSE VOICES AGAIN!’

15. Took a box of condoms to the checkout clerk and asked where is the fitting room?

And last, but not least:

16. October 23: Went into a fitting room, shut the door, waited awhile; then yelled very loudly, ‘Hey! There’s no toilet paper in here.’

One of the clerks passed out.

10 Amazing Women You’ve Never Heard Of

JONATHAN H. KANTOR

While you’ve probably heard of Rosa Parks, Harriet Tubman, and Susan B. Anthony, history is filled with amazing women whom most people have never heard of. Whether this is due to the misogynistic nature of past historians or simply because people failed to take note of their work while they were alive, many women have not received the recognition they are due.

There are thousands of talented women who have made the world a better place, but these 10 are some of the most influential. Odds are, you haven’t heard of many of them, but all 10 deserve recognition for their work. Due to their incredible accomplishments, these women are presented in no particular order as they stand together equally.

Long before the United States considered giving women the right to vote, Jovita Idar was fighting against a patriarchal society that oppressed her for both her femininity and her origins. Born in Laredo, Texas, to Mexican immigrants, Idar grew up in a place and time which wasn’t friendly to Mexican Americans.

In her early career, she became a teacher but was frustrated by the lack of supplies hindering her ability to teach. Seeing her impact diminished, she put her voice to work and became a journalist.

She wrote about inequality and segregation throughout her community. She also supported numerous causes created to help women gain a voice in politics, and she became an outspoken critic of policies she deemed shameful.

While working for the newspaper El Progreso, she called out President Wilson’s dispatch of troops to the southern border, which angered the US Army and the Texas Rangers. The latter came to the newspaper to shut it down.[1]

Refusing to back down, Idar stood in the doorway and kept them from entering. The paper was later shut down, but her defiant stance against the Rangers—all of whom were armed and angry with her—became a symbol of resistance for women and Mexican Americans across the nation.

9Shirley Chisholm

Throughout her political career, Shirley Chisholm racked up a lot of firsts. She holds the honor of being the first African-American woman elected to the United States Congress, having represented New York’s 12th Congressional District. She retained the office for seven terms between 1969 and 1983.

Not wanting to keep her options limited, she became the first black candidate to vie for a major party’s nomination for the president of the United States in 1972. She was also the first woman to run for the Democratic Party’s nomination for that office.

Chisolm’s work in the Congress established her as a woman of the people. She worked tirelessly on bills supporting a revocation of the draft, an establishment of a minimum wage for domestic workers, and the Equal Rights Amendment.[2]

Her legacy has been credited as helping to “pave the way” for the 2008 Democratic presidential primary battle, which pitted an African American man against a woman. No matter who won that battle, a new “first” would have been achieved. As we all know, the primary’s results helped to establish the first African-American presidency in the United States.

8Sojourner Truth

Sojourner Truth was born into slavery as Isabella Baumfree in 1797. She escaped following the birth of her daughter in 1826.

She left behind a son but was able to recover him when she successfully sued a white man for his custody in 1828. That made her the first black woman to win a case of that type. Her son Peter had been illegally sold to Alabama from New York following that state’s emancipation.

She continued to work for several years. In 1843, she changed her name to Sojourner Truth and became a Methodist.[3] At this time, she became an outspoken abolitionist and supporter of pacifism and the women’s rights movement. She came into contact with the likes of Frederick Douglass, who influenced her work.

In 1850, she published a memoir titled The Narrative of Sojourner Truth: A Northern Slave. The following year, she gave her most famous speech, “Ain’t I a Woman,” at the Ohio Women’s Rights Convention. Her words had an impact and were recalled for decades in both the women’s rights movement as well as the abolitionist movement.

She was chosen as one of the women whose work influenced the Nineteenth Amendment to the US Constitution and will be featured on the back of the $10 bill set for release in 2020.

7Huda Sha’arawi

Huda Sha’arawi was born into a wealthy family in Upper Egypt. Her father, Muhammad Sultan, was the first president of the Egyptian Representative Council, so it stands to reason that she grew up comfortably.

While this is true, she was a woman in 19th-century Egypt, which meant she either had to live at home or in a harem. After she was married to her cousin and later separated, she found some independence and furthered her education. This led Sha’arawi to feminism, where she became one of the first women to remove her veil in public. Within a decade, the majority of women in Egypt were doing the same.

She hosted women’s groups in her home and brought other women into public, which was unheard-of at the time. In 1919, she led the first women’s street demonstration during the Egyptian Revolution and was subsequently elected as the president of the Wafdist Women’s Central Committee.[4]

Though few of her demands were ever met by the government in her lifetime, her work for women’s rights helped lay the groundwork for future gains by Egyptian women. She is remembered as one of the earliest leaders of feminism and women’s rights in Egypt by Arab women around the world.

6Lilian Bland

While most people know of Amelia Earhart, few recall the accomplishments of Lilian Bland. She was one of the first women in the world to design, build, and fly an airplane.

In 1910, when few had ever seen an airplane, she became interested in flying after receiving a postcard from her uncle in Paris. Determined to fly, she got to work and made a biplane glider which she ironically named Mayfly. The glider worked, but she wanted to achieve powered flight like the Wright Brothers. So she ordered a two-stroke engine. It arrived before the fuel tank, but that didn’t slow her down.

She constructed a tank out of an empty bottle of whiskey and her deaf aunt’s ear trumpet. Although it didn’t work, her perseverance paid off. Once the fuel tank arrived, she became the first woman to fly an aircraft in Ireland.

Her father didn’t like the idea of his daughter flying and offered to buy her a car. It actually worked, and she taught herself to drive. Later, she ran a car dealership in Belfast and became Ford’s first agent in Northern Ireland.

Lilian Bland was always unconventional. But her need to fly helped prove the innovation of women, and she helped inspire others to achieve greatness all over the world.[5]

5Margaret Hamilton

While everyone knows the name Neil Armstrong, few have ever heard of Margaret Hamilton, the woman who helped take men to the Moon in 1969. Hamilton was the director of the Software Engineering Division of the MIT Instrumentation Laboratory, which created the onboard flight software used by the Apollo space program.

Without her work, NASA would have been unable to navigate to the Moon. Her feat was recognized by President Barack Obama, who awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2016.

Later in her career, she founded and became the CEO of Hamilton Technologies, Inc. The company went on to develop the Universal Systems Language, which has furthered system and software design.

Hamilton is credited with more than 130 published papers and is the woman who coined the phrase “software engineering,” a career which is predominantly held by men. She is one of the leading pioneers in computer science and easily one of the most important people involved with the Apollo missions.[6]

4Roza Shanina

Roza Georgiyevna Shanina was a Soviet sniper who had 59 confirmed kills during World War II. She joined the military in 1941 following the death of her brother.

After volunteering for service, she became a marksman who would serve on the front lines, which was taboo for women. Although she isn’t the first female sniper, she is likely the best in terms of accuracy and number of kills in combat. During the Battle of Vilnius, she racked up 12 kills alone and became proficient in making doublets, which is hitting two targets with a single bullet.

She was the first female Soviet sniper to receive the Order of Glory, awarded for bravery in the face of the enemy. Her exploits were glorified in a Canadian newspaper in 1944 when she was called “the unseen terror of East Prussia.”

Shanina was killed in action when she covered an already wounded artillery unit commander, saving him from further injury. She is fondly remembered in Russia as a hero of the Soviet Union. She fought at a time when women were rarely considered for combat roles and when female snipers were traditionally removed from the front lines. But her abilities and accomplishments speak for themselves.[7]

3Niloofar Rahmani

Prior to the US and allied invasion of Afghanistan in 2001, women were not allowed to do much in the country. They were forbidden from attending school beyond age eight and were unable to hold office, leave the house without an escort, or pretty much do anything they wanted.

Since the fall of the Taliban, things have changed. Niloofar Rahmani has established herself as the first female fixed-wing air force aviator in the country’s history. She is also the first female pilot in the Afghan military. Although she and her family have received death threats, she has persisted.[8]

Rahmani has been recognized internationally for her perseverance in attaining her role as the first woman to pilot an aircraft in the Afghan military. The US State Department gave her their International Women of Courage Award in 2015.

Following the international recognition she received, the death threats intensified and Rahmani remained in the US. She applied for and received asylum in the United States in 2018 and plans to become a military pilot in the United States Air Force.

2Belva Ann Lockwood

Long before women were given the right to vote in the United States, women like Belva Ann Lockwood were fighting for women’s rights. Lockwood graduated from law school and became one of the first women to practice law in the United States.

Though she wasn’t the first to practice, she did attain the distinction of becoming the first woman to successfully petition Congress in 1879 to practice before the United States Supreme Court. At that time, women weren’t even allowed to cast a ballot in the country. But she stood before the Supreme Court, which is an honor few attorneys ever achieve.

Lockwood ran for president of the United States in both 1884 and 1888 on the National Equal Rights Party ticket. Although she failed to win those elections, she did become the first woman to officially appear on a national ballot.

Lockwood has been honored for her achievements long after her death in 1917. Her likeness has been carved into ship figureheads and has appeared on United States Postal Service stamps. Ships have been named in her honor, and she was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame in 1983.[9]

1Hedy Lamarr

To be fair, you’ve probably heard of Hedy Lamarr. She was a famous Hollywood actress who was once called “the most beautiful woman in the world.” But that’s not what she should be recognized for.

Lamarr was an inventor, and her work helped develop the technology on which you may be reading this article. During World War II, Lamarr helped to develop frequency-hopping spread spectrum for radio signals, which was meant to be used in the development of torpedoes.

Torpedoes were nothing new, but they were susceptible to jamming until her technology could be implemented. Unfortunately, the navy didn’t take her work seriously until the 1960s when it was finally used in most of their communications tech. That technology became the underlying concept used by the cell phone network, Bluetooth, CDMA, and Wi-Fi communications.[10]

Her inventions revolutionized the world, and she was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2014. Her work in Hollywood is certainly noteworthy. But given her contributions to science and technology, she deserves widespread recognition for her accomplishments outside the industry.

”God thirsts for honest love.”Meher Baba

”God thirsts for honest love.”Meher Baba

Can we love God this way?Ask Baba in a pure and sincere way for the miracle of unconditional Love. And the Beloved will make it come true.

Goes:

”Don’t worry; all this is illusion. You should love me and be honest and faithful. You must be so honest in your love that even God should bow down to you for it. God thirsts for honest love. There must not be the slightest tinge of hypocrisy. Ages have made the mind so dirty that it is quite hard for it to be pure and honest. It is the mind’s nature to doubt, to reason, to be happy, to be sick, to be sore and so forth. Had it not been its nature, there would have been no need for births after births. Imagination has created all this, and the world is so ensnared in it, it is as if bogged down in mire. And extrication from the morass becomes impossible. There is only one remedy for it: honest love for God and help from a Master.” Meher Baba

The Sarcastic And Thundery Best Friend A Poem by Jay

The Sarcastic And Thundery Best Friend

A Poem by Jay

Whose best friend is that? I think I know.
Its owner is quite angry though.
She was cross like a dark potato.
I watch her pace. I cry hello.

She gives her best friend a shake,
And screams I’ve made a bad mistake.
The only other sound’s the break,
Of distant waves and birds awake.

The best friend is sarcastic, thundery and deep,
But she has promises to keep,
Tormented with nightmares she never sleeps.
Revenge is a promise a girl should keep.

She rises from her cursed bed,
With thoughts of violence in her head,
A flash of rage and she sees red.
Without a pause I turned and fled.

With thanks to the poet, Robert Frost, for the underlying structure.

How’ll the day unfold for me, Stars… errr .. The Random phrases foretell

Love and Happiness.

If you want to be certain about the object of love before giving your love, it is only a form of calculating selfishness.

Love in which there is no sense of restraint cannot be born of a conviction which is based upon things accessible to the mind

Love and happiness are the only important things in life, and they are both absent in the dry and factual knowledge which is accessible to the intellect.

Random phrases I generate every day

Hello BFFFs.

( Best friends, fans, followers and some Frenemies who also visit my blog 🙂 ) A great morning to all of you.

How do I begin my Blog writing daily and what do I post.

I find generating random phrases every day as a good creative mind exercise.

I am a lateral thinker, I adapted Dr. Edward DeBono and his teachings early.

My Best Coach and Mentor I respect most is Dr. Marshall Goldsmith who taught me to be HUMAN FIRST.  Take final calls if the relationships are not working by forgiving each other.

The randomness of these phrases adds value and sometimes impacts my thoughts for the day.  I sometimes add few points on how the impact there was or should likely to be depending upon the time I post these on my Blog

Have a Great morning

  1. Jaws of Death

Meaning: Being in a dangerous or very deadly situation.

Hmmm… These days the fingers on the Keyboard do more damage than our tongues which are rarely used in the virtual era.

  2. Down For The Count

Meaning: Someone or something that looks to be defeated, or nearly so.

Well, at this moment I feel like the one defeated.  But there are some lights at the end of the tunnel, there are few sparks and things usually average out for me.

  3. Right Out of the Gate

Meaning: Right from the beginning; to do something from the start.

Hmm… let me think about this. yesterday I shared a lesson about Mystery as the opening.

  4. On the Same Page

Meaning: Thinking alike or understanding something in a similar way with others. This can always be a game changer in case of differences and disagreements. It works all the time.

  5. Swinging For the Fences

    Meaning: Giving something your all.

Yes. I am giving it my all. Every effort I do for future today, I believe I am Swinging for the fences.

Whenever I write Hmmm… EITHER I am undecided, or I am intuitive, Or I have already formed a judgement and still willing to give it a second thought, alternative options – “What else could it mean” chance.  In short, even in a fully stretched Elastic situation – this means I am still FLEXIBLE, I am Receptive to new idea, thought, solutions.

I also write another blog post picking up Random Sentences. 3 to 5 of them and look at them creatively to actually plan some of the days actions – not using the same words but twisting words, looking at their attributes and applying to problems I foresee in the day.

Sometimes, I am sitting on the horns of a dilemma. I turn to Gita and Bible and pick up a Shloka and a Verse to find solution to my problem.

As day advances, I share the best newsletter or quote I have seen on the day. I also then move on to writing a Poem, a Couplet, A haiku or some times all of them.  This is my blog posting.

Then I check the Blog page of every blogger who has liked my post or some of them who have not visited my blog or not given a like or comment on my posts and read their blogs and add like or comment.

That’s pretty much about my last 2 months’s blogging process.

The Thundery And Blue Car

A Poem by Jay

Whose car is that? I think I know.
Its owner is quite happy though.
Full of joy like a vivid rainbow,
I watch her laugh. I cry hello.

She gives her car a shake,
And laughs until her belly aches.
The only other sound’s the break,
Of distant waves and birds awake.

The car is thundery, blue and deep,
But she has promises to keep,
After dark chocolates and lots of sleep.
Sweet dreams come to her cheap.

She rises from her gentle bed,
With thoughts of kittens in her head,
She eats her jam with lots of bread.
Ready for the day ahead.

With thanks to the poet, Robert Frost, for the underlying structure.

Jay’s Tantra 7 – For a Bad, Bad, Sad, Sad Day and the day just shines Bright!

I use this small hack I call as Tantra whenever I have a Bad BAd or Sad SAD day.

Someone once gifted me a Bible, and I have a childhood ShrimadbhagwatGita.

I open a page to read a Verse or a Shloka.

Yesterday, was one such day.  I went to my daily morning walks and stopped for taking some change at the Tea Shop.  The devout guy was lighting Agarbatti/ Incense to Lord Ganpati, Goddess Saraswati and Goddess Lakshmi.  I said, Good Omen ( Yes, even a Skeptic on a bad bad sad sad day can become believer ! ).

I read the following

2 Kings 2:18Passage: When they returned to Elisha, who was staying in Jericho, he said to them, “Didn’t I tell you not to go?”

And from Gita came

dhyaayato vishayaanh pumsah sangasteshhupajaayate |
sangaath samjaayate kaamah kaamaath krodho abhijaayate ||

A Shloka – my father taught me at the Age 7.

When a person dwells longingly on sense objects, an inclination towards them is generated.
This inclination develops into desire and desire gives rise to anger.

I got my messages – Strong and Clear. By evening I had put them to use and had Peace of mind and a good night’s sleep. Everything became alright.

Wanna try – Please do. It works for me every time.

The Teacher and the Woman Rhyming Couplet Ideas by jay

See the eating of the teacher,
I think he’s angry at the imaginary creature.

He finds it hard to see the tissue,
Overshadowed by the heavy gnu.

Who is that flying near the rat?
I think she’d like to eat the doormat.

She is but an intelligent woman,
Admired as she sits upon a noblewoman.

Her gentle car is just a turtle,
It needs no gas, it runs on pirtle.

She’s not alone she brings a sheep,
a pet pig, and lots of weep.

The pig likes to chase a monkey,
Especially one that’s in the flunky.

The teacher shudders at the fancy pig
He want to leave but she wants the rig.

Even Sinners and Saints can become Better and still better.

The sinner need not have the stigma of eternal degradation and the saint need not have pride in his moral attainments.

No one, however saintly he may be, has attained the heights of moral virtues except after a life of moral failings, and no one is so bad as to be unable to improve and become good.

Everyone, no matter how depraved, can gradually become better and better until he becomes the best example for all mankind.

There is always hope for everyone; none is utterly lost and none need despair. It remains true, however, that the way to divinity lies through the renunciation of evil in favour of the good.

Enterprise: StartupPeopleConsulting

Founder: Vandana Sharma

Year it was founded: 2017

Sector: Business Services

Based out of: Bengaluru

Major Vandana Sharma has been a pathbreaker all her life. Her sense of adventure and tenacity led to her reaching the position of Major in the Indian Army. As a woman and a successful officer, she broke many stereotypes about women in uniform while in service. Her career in the armed forces is distinguished with her contribution to the Kargil War of 1999 being recorded and commended in the Military History of Army Ordnance Corps. From then to today, her entrepreneurial spirit, as she puts it, has attracted her to situations that required her innovative spirit and problem solving skills to resolve. Post her military career, Vandana forayed into the corporate world and has 21 years of diverse experience across multiple sectors. Working in leadership positions, she has added value to hiring practices and organisational transformation at companies like Wipro, Myntra and GMR. She established StartupPeopleConsulting in 2017 in Bengaluru. StartupPeopleConsulting is an organisation geared towards guiding entrepreneurs as they move towards their goals. Vandana is a TEDx speaker and she also speaks at various women’s forums to inspire and motivate more women to live independent and empowered lives.

Time in the army

Vandana was raised as a ‘fauji’ kid. Her father, and many other members of her family, were part of the armed forces. She found herself dreaming of being in the armed forces from a very young age and successfully took forward the family tradition of serving the country. Looking back, she narrates an experience that shaped her conviction. “My father was in the Air Force and my brother who is eight-years-older than me also joined the army. I would wear my father’s cap when he would return home and look myself in the mirror wondering if I could ever wear the uniform. I was in grade two or three then.”

Women were not allowed in the armed forces at the time, but change was in the offing. Women were included for the first time on the rolls in 1992 and Vandana knew she wanted to be part of this landmark change. In a batch of 33, she became one of the first few women to don the army greens. Her leaderships skills shone through, and over the course of the next 10 years, she attained the rank of Major and served with distinction in the Kargil War. Speaking about her time at the Army, she shares, “If you can run as fast, shoot as well, and do what you are signed up for – in my case, it was being able to supply stores effortlessly – as well as other male counterparts, nobody looks down upon you or considers you less.”

Business story

Following her successful stint in the army, she forayed into the corporate world. Her unique brand of leadership and experience helped her make significant contributions as an organisation transformer at Myntra, GMR, and Wipro – all large companies with commensurately large challenges.

While working with these companies, she realised that she had an entrepreneurial streak in her, being drawn to situations where things were “being done for the first time in an organisation or amid chaos and needed a fix.” Importantly, she realised, as she says, “It gave me a lot of joy to share my experience and help guide budding entrepreneurs on setting up startups and working with limited resources, financial constraints and acute deadlines.”

Her passion for supporting budding entrepreneurs took root and she founded StartUpPeopleConsulting in August 2017. Vandana shares, “A lot of entrepreneurs learn the hard way after making mistakes right from the start — from the time of searching for co-founders and early employees to find the right talent as per not just the skill or sector but also the values and vision of the organisations. My project helps early entrepreneurs with all people-related matters and also helps build their networks and teams across locations with minimum effort and speedy timelines.”

Challenges of starting up

Vandana finds, that like most entrepreneurs, her main issues are resource allocation, prioritisation, and selecting the right projects to address the right issues in challenging areas. Of course, scaling up and monetisation are areas of focus as she builds her business.

GlobalLinker Advantage

Vandana finds GlobalLinker very helpful as a networking tool. She says,“GlobalLinker is a great platform for digital meetings for small businesses. I am exploring business opportunities to expand my business network. This platform should be able to bring like-minded folks together who can leverage on each other and grow from strength to strength. The productivity tools and offers are very useful.”

Big business dream

Vandana’s dreams reveal a lot about her determined and visionary nature. When asked about her big business dream, she says, “I want to contribute towards building and nurturing an ecosystem for startups in India. I want to ensure that new-age organisations are agile and swift-footed to enable meeting market dynamics globally, have consistent performances like any other economic power, and build a great work ethic and culture in Indian startups. The right foundation and talent could help them grow into multi-billion organisations. Besides this, I am passionate about making a difference to this world. The causes which are close to my heart are women’s empowerment and doing something meaningful for armed forces veterans.”

Advice to aspiring entrepreneurs

“It’s a marathon so stay the course and don’t sprint. My motto in life has been: The universe falls in love with a stubborn heart! What you wish for always comes true if you work hard for it, so if you believe in your journey and purpose, it will come true one day,” shares Vandana.

Mazes of our own making and self-created Entanglements

All life is an effort to attain freedom from self-created entanglement.

It is a desperate struggle to undo what has been done under ignorance, to throw away the accumulated burden of the past, to find rescue from the debris left by a series of temporary achievements and failures.

Life seeks to unwind the limiting sanskaras of the past and to obtain release from the mazes of its own making, so that its further creations may spring directly from the heart of eternity and bear the stamp of unhampered freedom and intrinsic richness of being which knows no limitation.

  2. Go green – don’t waste paper
  3. Life can get really busy – take some time out to spend with a family member
  4. I rarely listen to others – ask someone about their day

Spirituality and Detachment

Spirituality consists in meeting life adequately and fully without being overpowered by the opposites.

It must assert its dominion over all illusions—however attractive or powerful.

Without avoiding contact with the different forms of life, a perfect man functions with complete detachment in the midst of intense activity.

Have you felt Humbled?

I was going thru some of my old EverNote notes.
It read:
“Unable to get people on con call.
Someone commented on my old tie –all it needs is a stitch.
I was humbled.”
Those were good old Corporate days. Sometimes due to the Global Time Differences, it would become difficult to get people on Conference Calls/ Video Calls/ Audio Chats.
I remember vividly, one of the colleagues took a dig at my tie whose label had come out from one side and was visible to the powerful camera and hence to all participants.
My colleague said “All your Old Tie needs is a Stitch”.   It humbled me.
Today, I do not remember the name of the colleague and my bad, I did not note it down in the Evernote.
Thinking – how to mend some of the Old ties? The Old friendships. The Oldest ones for example.  A friend sent me a WhatsApp last afternoon “All well? No news from you for long?”
I thought, this friend was visiting USA to his two sons and may not have access to his Indian phone number/ whatsapp as it is a long stay – he had planned to stay for 6 months.
Then after a while, I found two missed calls and one which stopped before 3 rings ( Damn Redmi Y1 and Damn my One Plus 5 T).  I called him.  He was back 15 days ago and was shifting home after 34 years.  We became colleagues and later thick friends since 1985.  His old flat / building was going under renovation and the neighbors were concerned that he had not yet vacated the flat so that the builder can start work.  He shifted to a small one bedroom flat. Sitting among boxes, he thought of me and called. He was worried as most babyboomers do when they do not get RESPONSE.
We had a catch up chat, I said I may visit your town soon for a morning/ evening trip and will try and atleast speak from  airport.  He said stay back, be my guest. Let’s catch up. We may be gone again for a long long time to USA and who knows….
I knew I was humbled again – All the Old Tie needed what just a proverbial STITCH.

Did you know…

… that today, besides being Father’s Day (Happy Father’s Day!) is International Sing-Out Day? On the birthday of Barry Manilow, singer and songwriter, sing out a little song! Manilow was born on June 17, 1946, in Brooklyn, New York. Happy birthday, Barry!

Friedrich Nietzsche On The Secret Ingredient For Happiness

The idea that happiness-maximization is the criterion one should use in deciding what to do and how to act has probably been the most popular ethical view throughout history.

In opposition, Nietzsche insists that happiness should not be your goal.

For example, in his magnum opus — Thus Spoke Zarathustra — his protagonist declares:

“Do I strive after happiness? [No,] I strive after my works!”
And in Twilight of the Idols, he explicitly states that:

“Man [should] not strive after happiness.”
At this point, any philosopher worth his salt asks: “But what exactly does Nietzsche mean when he says these things?”

via Friedrich Nietzsche On The Secret Ingredient For Happiness

Selfishness, Selflessness and Personal Ego

Selfishness and selflessness are two phases of the life of the personal ego, and these two phases are continuous with each other.

Selfishness arises when all the desires are centred around the narrow individuality. Selflessness arises when this crude organisation of desires suffers disintegration and there is a general dispersing of desires with the result that they cover a much wider sphere.

Selfishness is the narrowing down of interests to a limited field; selflessness is the extension of interests over a wide field.

To put it paradoxically, selfishness is a restricted form of selflessness, and selflessness is the drawing out of selfishness into a wide sphere of activity.

A chance encounter in a fertilizer dealer shop reminds me of this caption always.  I met a group of Guntotting Ex Dacoits who had spent 7 years in Open Jail as punishment and surrendered in front of Late Shri JayPrakash Narayan.

This Ex Dacoit was a Farmer and political leader now.  When introduced as the sales person who was selling his favorite brand of fertilizer – He had asked in HINDI whther “Ye Saheb swarthee hain ya parmarthee”. A Deep question about whether this person I am being introduced is Selfish or Selfless?  Even an Ex Convict chooses to know this beforehand.  Why I wondered?

Mental Turmoil: & a Random Quote from Bible – Jay’s Tantra -3

Numbers 31:15

Passage:

“Have you allowed all the women to live?”

he asked them.

I had a mental turmoil. At such moments, I turn to Gita, Ramayan, Bible and turn a page and pick one verse or quote.  Try and mull and understand the meaning to find inner peace and God’s message to me to listen to my inner voice with HIS Voice reverberating in my mind together.

This is a personal technique – I call it Jay’s Tantra and it helps me at times to go find the meaning beyond the words, deeply thinking, introspecting, reminiscences of the past and slowly it brings me to the present – my STATE and shows me a path to overcome the mental turmoil, dilemmas, indecisive phase, awkwardness of the decisions I thought or took and their impact.

I need to hear a preacher understand the quote from the bible but the belief that it is a God’s word – leads me to what I began searching and it has helped in terrible moments in my life.  They have always helped me to bounce back with vigor, rigor, self-confidence.

Sunday – Acts of kindness.

  1. Reconnect with your grandparents or an elderly person you know – give them a call! ( I reconnected with my granddaughter after a long while – she’s fluent in English, Hindi, Marathi and taught me a few Telugu words too 🙂 . WOW !
  2. Lend a friend a book you think they’d like (Gave away a whole library)
  3. Leave a kind message anywhere (in a library book, on a computer etc.)
  4. Wardrobe overflowing? Donate clothes to a charity ( I give it to a Blind school)
  5. Make amends with someone you may have wronged (Hmmm….. May be, I will)
  6. Know someone going through something you’ve been through? Give them advice
  7. Volunteer your time for a good cause  (PLANNING to create a video channel for the charities I support with help of a startup Video/ Filmmaker).
  8. Help someone improve, give them constructive feedback (Neyt! I’d rather feedforward as we can’t go back and correct it – but we can shape up in future.)
  9. We all love surprises! Buy someone an unexpected gift – Yes. worth a thought (Wife and daughter both gifted ME a USPA T-shirt each ! )
  10. Plant a seed – yes overdue. Note to self. Must do.

Death will be ‘optional’ and ageing ‘curable’ by 2045, say genetic engineers

Sat, Apr 21, 2018

news@thinkspain.com @thinkspain

DYING will be ‘optional’ within just 27 years and the ageing process will be ‘reversible’, according to two genetic engineers during the presentation of their new book in Barcelona.

José Luis Cordeiro, born in Venezuela to Spanish parents, and Cambridge (UK) mathematician David Wood, founders of the operating system ‘Symbian’, have just published The Death of Death and say immortality is a real and scientific possibility that could come much earlier than originally thought.

Humans will only die in accidents, never of natural causes or illness, by around the year 2045, say Cordeiro and Wood, who say it is ‘crucial’ that old age starts to be classified as an ‘illness’ so that publicly-funded research into its ‘cure’ can extend.

Nanotechnology is key, among other new genetic manipulation techniques, the engineers said during the presentation at Barcelona’s Equestrian Circle.

The process will involve turning ‘bad’ genes into healthy ones, eliminating dead cells from the body, repairing damaged cells, treatments with stem cells and ‘printing’ vital organs in 3D.

Cordeiro, who is based at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the USA, says he has ‘chosen not to die’ and that in 30 years’ time, he will be ‘younger than he is today’.

Ageing is the result of DNA ‘tails’, known as ‘telomeres’, in chromosomes – of which every cell except red blood and sex cells has 23 pairs – becoming shorter, and reversing ageing involves lengthening the telomeres.

Telomeres become damaged and shortened with the passage of time, a process that speeds up in the event of toxins entering the body – smoking, alcohol and air pollution are among elements that reduce the length of telomeres, thus accelerating ageing.

Cordeiro and Wood believe that within 10 years, illnesses such as cancer will be curable, and that major international corporations such as Google will be ‘entering the field of medicine’ because they are ‘beginning to realise that curing ageing is possible’.

Microsoft has reportedly already announced the setting up of a cryopreservation centre in which a scientist is researching the possibility of cancer being completely curable within a decade.

The engineers explain that, although ‘people generally do not know about it’, it was discovered in 1951 how cancer cells are immortal: when Henrietta Lacks died from cervical cancer, surgeons removed the tumour and kept it – and it is still ‘alive’ today.

Immortality will not necessarily mean the planet becomes overcrowded, the scientists say: there is still plenty of room for more people on Earth, and these days, people do not have anywhere near as many children as they did in past decades and centuries; plus, ‘it will be possible to live in space by then’.

“Japan and the Koreas, if they continue with their current trend of hardly having any children, will become extinct – within two centuries, there’ll be no Japanese or Korean people on the planet,” Cordeiro says.

“But thanks to these new techniques, there will indeed be Japanese and Korean people, because they’ll live forever and remain young.”

The cost of anti-ageing treatment was compared to that of the latest SmartPhones.

“At first, it’ll be expensive, but with a competitive market the price will gradually fall because it’ll be something that benefits everyone,” Cordeiro says.

“Technology, when it’s new, is poor and extremely expensive, but it eventually becomes democratic and mainstream and becomes cheaper.”

The engineers say they have already been employing their techniques for two years – illegally, but in Colombia where there are fewer regulations covering genetic manipulation.

Elisabeth Parrish, their first human patient, ‘started to see symptoms of ageing and asked what could be done to prevent it’.

Her treatment is ‘very risky and even illegal’, Wood explains, but at the moment is going well, has not had any adverse side-effects, and the level of telomeres in her blood is ’20 years younger than before’.

“I want Spain to have a place in the world of these technologies and show that we’re not mad, it’s just that people still don’t know about them,” Wood concluded.

The Death of Death will eventually be published in four languages at first – Spanish, English, Portuguese and Korean – and all proceeds from its sales will be ploughed back into the authors’ research.

Random Phrases for today.

Some of these random phrases tell us the course of actions or how the day will unfold.

Take today’s example

Dropping Like Flies

Meaning:

To fall down ill or

to die in large numbers.

Fortunately, No one died, but because of the biorhythm changes, someone fell sick suddenly.  All well no.

Happy as a Clam

Meaning:

The state of being happy;
feeling delighted.
My morning walk and stopovers for WhatsApp, Social media and WordPress posting are always good. It is the SMS and emails which make me morose. I believe firmly in Things Average out theory. ( Theory being one man’s opinion 🙂 ) Day is ending much better.  First someone close fell ill, then daughter feel and hurt knees  and day is yet to end and my final article publishing deadline is still looming but I am hopeful that things will average out and I shall be happy as a Clam.

Drawing a Blank

Meaning:

Failing to recall a memory.
Unable to remember something.
That’s rough, that’s something no one should have. It is like a brain fog in which we do not even try to find a light.  Like the Dementors in the Harry Potter novels.  It is BAD and I pray to Almighty to cure them fast.

Talk the Talk

Meaning:

Supporting what you say,

not just with words,

but also through action or evidence.

I am doing an online UDEMY course refresher on NLP by Kain Ramsay.  It came so cheap! Rs. 640 for nearly 120 videos and articles.  And the trainer Kain is so wonderful. He taught something today and I put it in practice. It was about how NLP practitioners abuse, misuse and manipulate sometimes.  I followed the herd and tried. It came true in actions and evidence.

Dilemmas – What do I do

We all are at crossroads in our life sometimes where there are two routes, options available to us and we have a dilemma to choose the right or left path and come to a decision.

I depend on Facts.  But decision making sometimes is under pressure.  Sometimes we have to make decision without full assessment/ availability of facts. Other times it becomes difficult as there is no time to Assess, Analyse, Deploy, Choose.  Sometimes the options may not be clear.

I look up to my holy books Ramayan, Geeta and at times to a gifted Bible for answers.  Close my eyes, pray to God and open a book and keep my finger randomly on a verse and read.

This morning I read

2 Samuel 7:19

Passage:

And as if this were not enough in your sight,

Sovereign LORD,

you have also spoken about the future of the house of your servant –

and this decree,

Sovereign LORD,

is for a human being!

Then with my own word associations, perceptions, knowledge about the time, context of the verse I create a linkage – a forced association of words to my situation and find an answer. Usually, the dilemma vanishes.  The holy books become my temporary mentors and show me the path.

Random acts of Kindness we can do.

  7. Feed a stray animal if you spot one
  8. Leave someone flowers anonymously
  9. Be proactive – sign a petition for a good cause
  10. Google ‘survey for charity’ and complete one. They receive money for every one you fill out!

Begin a Day with Some Random Phrases:

I usually look for a word, sentence or phrase at the beginning of the day.  It gets stuck in the brain like the Musical note or a lyric – (I hear favorite songs daily for 2 hours+ while on the walk) and usually is an important one and sometimes a reminder too. It stays in the subconscious and does its work of sending cues, triggers, prompts or harsh nudges by elbows to my ribs sometimes with its reminders.

Random Sentences, Musings, Thoughts, some Rant too:). Have a Great weekend

  1. Has it happened to you? Someone borrowed a rare book, an Autographed book in your prized possession which you loved reading several times when you had time and one day someone came and borrowed it – never to return. She borrowed the book from me few months ago which I bought on eBay and the seller had to find with deep search and told me that what I shall get is an outdated version, the pages are discolored and there will be a stamp of the authenticity that a library had discarded this book and it is out of print and there does not seem to be a possibility of it being reprinted.  I had loved this while doing my Management course and it was a great tool for me when I taught MBA students for 15 years. Then one day someone came over.  I felt she should read it. I said, please read and return and hasn’t yet returned it and the sad thing is I know she has not even read it once.  What feelings it generates in you?
  2. Last Friday in three week’s time I saw a spotted striped blue worm shake hands with a legless lizard. It has begun to rain in Bangalore and the impact of the Cyclone in Mangalore coastal area has made the climate cool.  Sometimes, on my long walks I sit in the public garden chair and get to see nature again. Now the sentence above when you read it brings up some emotions and then the rational mind thinks = Oh! but a lizard has only 2 legs and how can it possibly shake hands?  True. I made it up but isn’t it a thought to be mentally/ with your heart be able to shake that imaginary hand or see a blind person see you?  Does make me love nature, does bring out creativity and inspiration for humanity with the Right side of the brain which I call as my Heart – My true North Star.  How about you?
  3. My Mum tried to be cool by saying that she likes all the same things that I do. She was a teacher and in later life devoted herself to social work and took Deeksha in RamKrishna Mission to be a Monk. Worked till end of her life with tribal girls of North East who were sent to the school and hostel she was incharge of by parents who felt the girl child’s life in danger due to militancy.  It took me some time for me to understand the significance of her words.  She asked me to learn skills. She said skills never go away. I learned to type, playing a flute, drawing, painting, stitching, repairing, reading, writing, speaking as a Speaker, Teaching and realised the significance of her words – ALL THE SAME THINGS I DO.  The good skills I learn the Habits I form.  Profound. Makes me nostalgic.

We are all Self-Luminous Stars! Cast Down on Earth. ..My latest Poem.

I loved to watch Stars in a Dark Night as a kid.

I still do,

not that frequently.

Now Home, TV, LAPTOP

I always thought

The Sky is

An Empty Wall.

One day I shall

find my space there

I shall write my name

on that wall.

Then I shall be known

As a Self-luminous Star

And a Christian friend

Gave a Bible as Gift.

I read the page

How you have

fallen from heaven,

son of the dawn!

You have been cast down

you who once

laid low the nations!

Random -Rambling -Rants :)

The Plot generator sent me a few sentences and it started getting thicker. Imagine writing something as mundane as the following statements in Bold...:)

  • She folded her handkerchief neatly.

And I realized the semi-wet piece of white cloth which got moist just looking at the screen for nearly 100 minutes on a Video call. Eyes were most, but words coming clear and firm. The discussions were heated and the confrontation brought stunned silence. I had to change tracks and laugh out loud to lessen the impact. There was constant wiping of First the right eye and later the left eye and the pursed lips told the story of suppressed sadness and angry emotions.

  • Everyone was busy, so I went to the movie alone.

The reason is, I tend to emote and shed a lot of tears whenever I see a very heart touching dialogue and superlative acting – and I like to be alone then.  I had struggled during my Film Censoring days when it was embarrassing and awkward and once a Lady Film Director saw me in this mode and smiles understandingly and when we passed her film – she said, “Jay, you made my day. My film and actors had to bring out this emotion and I was happy to see you shedding tears at the right scenes while maintaining your Objectivity as Censor ( and suggesting a few cuts as well 🙂 ) I am certain the audiences will like the film. It did. It was a Hit.

  • The lake is a long way from here.

No I did not shed so many tears to fill the lake :).  These are our private moments, we shed tears at times very privately, without anyone knowing and we mask our emotions, sentiments.  Some fierce, firebrand people I have met have privately shared with me their quiet moments when they sobbed alone and shed tears profusely to calm their nerves.  IMHO,  it is good to let emotions flow sometimes rather than letting them stay suppressed with more pressure so that others do not know our inner softness. I won’t ever call it a weakness – I feel it is very natural. I tend to think it is Being Human.

  • What do you think?

Random Acts of Kindness

  1. Buy someone a coffee
  2. Gift someone something they complimented you for
  3. Be proactive – sign a petition for a good cause
  4. It’s hard to stay connected – reach out to an elderly person you know
  5. Go out of your way to thank someone today!
  6. No matter how annoying they can be, tell your siblings how much you appreciate them
  7. Fight climate change – go vegetarian for today!
  8. We all need help sometimes; offer someone a helping hand
  9. Is that litter on the floor? Pick it up and bin it
  10. Make a hot beverage for a friend/family

Readers may find some of these repeated again from prior posts – but nothing wrong repeating something which we found good.

Inadequacy. I read this and liked it instantly.

There is one quote that comes into my mind after reading this:

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.

Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.

It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us.

We ask ourselves, ‘Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?’

Actually, who are you not to be?

Your playing small does not serve the world.

There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you.

We are all meant to shine, as children do. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.

I don’t agree with this QOTD – Do you

So what if you are a Warren Buffet,  I have a mind of my own and I choose to differ with you, Sir.  If the following quote was true – there would be no fluctuations in the Stock prices you invest, your stock values would never come down.

Everything that we do by rote, by discipline, by habit surely does a few things. For e.g. My walks burn calories but as the walking distance reduces with my walking speed the calorie burn rate my not reduce as I walk for more time.  Consequently, the weight loss may not be the same.  I have 4 years of daily data on self which proves this point.

But then, who wants to take cudgels with the Richest and Respected man like Mr. Buffet who in his own right is a role model for me who never invests in stocks.  but sometimes, the quotes which are attributed to them and go viral on social media do not rightly capture, the moment when it was said, the context etc.

What do you think? It is difficult to change habits for us as adults and it is also difficult to continue doing every day, the same thing ain’t it?

Yo

u keep doing the same things and you get the same result over again.

—Warren Buffett

Today’s Inspirational Quote:

“Lighten up on yourself. No one is perfect. Gently accept your humanness.”

— Deborah Day

Radical Self Confidence

Self-confidence is a must for all of us- no matter which stage of our life journey we are in.

It doesn’t matter what our role looks like:

  • Whether we’ve lost ourselves in career or business

  • Whether we’re feeling lonely post-breakup or just lonely in a crowd or enjoying our solitude and the feelings of Quietude.

  • Whether we’re speaking on a stage or whispering our secret to a friend for the very first time

  • Whether our business came crashing and we are on the threshold of bankruptcy suddenly.

  • Whether our Revenue sources have dried and all our efforts to bring the derailed business back – fail due to lack of interest, apathy or our mental STATE.

  • We shall need radical self-confidence.

  1. Much of this sounds like saying “Close But No Cigar”

    Meaning:

Coming close to a successful outcome only to fall short at the end, we see our miserable situation while negatively imagining that others have no sympathy and they are laughing at us.

We shall Radical Self-Confidence to overcome the situation.

  2. We will have no choice but to “Go Out On a Limb”

    Meaning:

Putting ourselves in a risky situation in order to help somebody, or to hazard a guess about what could be the best possible way out of this jam.

We shall Need Radical Self-Confidence to over come the situation.

and go back to them later when you’re in a better frame of mind

Sometimes it is better to just walk away from things and go back to them later when you’re in a better frame of mind.

Try some of these to find your peace back.

  3. Try not to make a Mountain Out of a Molehill

Milton Fried man Prize for Ladies in White! WOW!

 CONGRATULATIONS !

The Cato Institute has presented Cuba’s Ladies in White (Damas de Blanco) with the 2018 Milton Friedman Prize for Advancing Liberty, a $250,000 biennial award presented to a group or individual who has made a significant contribution to advance human freedom. The Ladies in White have a simple message: The political prisoners of Cuba are our sons, brothers, and our husbands. They must not be forgotten.“All who labor in the name of freedom take great inspiration from — and feel a tremendous debt to — courageous people who risk everything to stand up to oppression. The Ladies in White are a stirring example,” said Peter Goettler, president and CEO of the Cato Institute.

The Ladies in White (Damas de Blanco) have a simple message: The political prisoners of Cuba are our sons, our brothers, and our husbands. They must not be forgotten.

Every Sunday, the Ladies in White gather, or attempt to gather, for Mass at Saint Rita de Casia Church in Havana, followed by a procession down Fifth Avenue. They wear white to symbolize the peaceful nature of their protest, and each wears a photograph of a loved one who is in prison. For this the authorities have constantly harassed them and organized mob violence against them.

The movement began on March 18, 2003, when journalist Héctor Maseda Gutiérrez was arrested in his home in Havana and sentenced to 20 years in prison for criticizing the regime of Fidel Castro. His case drew worldwide attention, with Amnesty International calling him a prisoner of conscience and demanding his release. Around 75 others were arrested at the same time, in an incident that has been called the Black Spring. All have since left prison, though not unconditionally, with the majority having had to leave Cuba. Since that time, sporadic arrests of journalists, lawyers, and other intellectuals have continued in Cuba, belying the myth that with normalized relations, Cuba’s human rights record would improve. If anything, it has deteriorated.

Two weeks after Maseda was arrested, his wife Laura Pollán Toledo brought together a group of wives, mothers, sisters, and daughters of the imprisoned to pray for their loved ones. They have continued to gather each Sunday, and the movement has since spread to other churches throughout Cuba. Although they are not a political party and do not have an overtly political program, they seek freedom of expression for all and the release of prisoners of conscience in Cuba. In recognition of their courage, the Ladies in White were the 2005 recipients of the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought, awarded by the European Parliament. The Cuban government prohibited them from attending the award ceremony in Strasbourg, France.

In 2015 Berta Soler, one of the leaders of the group, told the U.S. Senate, “Our aspirations are legitimate…. Our demands are quite concrete: freedom for political prisoners, recognition of civil society, the elimination of all criminal dispositions that penalize freedom of expression and association and the right of the Cuban people to choose their future through free, multiparty elections. We believe these demands are just and valid. Even more importantly, for us they represent the most concrete exercise of politics, a step in the direction of democratic coexistence. Cuba will change when the laws that enable and protect the criminal behavior of the forces of repression and corrupt elements that sustain the regime change.”

As the first step, the Ladies in White demand the release of all political prisoners. The outlook for many of the prisoners is grim; prison conditions are deplorable, visits are rare, and even their mail is intercepted by the authorities. And the Ladies themselves have faced increasing police harassment and arrest in recent years, as the Cuban government tries to hide-but not correct-its habit of quashing dissent. Laura Pollán died in 2011 under gravely suspicious circumstances. But the movement she founded continues: The Ladies in White will meet, pray, and bear witness every Sunday until Cuba’s political prisoners are freed.

Intolerance to difference – Good, bad, ugly?

I would not generalise, and would not attribute any of the three above. Tolerance in India has come to mean – Tolerating+Nonsense right politicians to some members of thof even the general public . So does that make the two negatives i.e. adding IN as a prefix – POSITIVE. No. I am afraid not.

But, I came across this great quote which I like as a Drawing and Painting Artist amateur and Art Critic.

“If you hear a voice within you say ‘you cannot paint,’ then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced.” -Vincent van Gogh

See if you can agree and appreciate the Great Artist.

Awakening latent Dreams!

According to Freud, every dream represents a wish fulfillment. Dreams are representative of the imaginary fulfillment of a wish or impulse in early childhood before such wishes have been repressed.

Sometimes you meet someone and your gut makes you judgemental immediately, without knowing anything about people. To Freud, dreams were all about wish fulfillment.

The manifest content of the dream masked the true wishes and desires of the dreamer, which were revealed in the latent content.

In the ‘falling’ dream example, Freud might have said that the act of falling represented giving into a sexual urge.

like someone is “Not the Sharpest Tool in the Shed”

Meaning:

Someone who isn’t witty or sharp, but rather,

they are ignorant, unintelligent, or senseless.

It is a daunting task to go deeper and find the latent dreams of such people. They are dreamers too, and they have a subconscious. Sometimes it gives them messages, signals but they are so subtle, soft and noiseless that people tend to forget them let alone take notice of them.

Freud believed that the content of dreams is related to wish fulfillment and suggested that dreams have two types of contentmanifest content and latent content. The manifest content is the actual literal subject matter of the dream while the latent content is the underlying meaning of these symbols

Whatever a Mentor can do to Awaken the Dreamer’s Dreams it remains that

Money Doesn’t Grow On Trees

Meaning:

Suggests that money is a resource that must be earned and is not one that’s easily acquired.
