Poem of the Day from Poem.com Newsletter

Ursula Andkjær Olson
Translated from the Danish by Katrina Øgaard Jensen
those who say that water
is doing grief’s work

back and forth:

grief-enhancing
grief-inhibiting
suppression-enhancing
suppression-inhibiting

washing
massaging
touching
cradling
letting it stream through

THEY’RE LYING

those who say:

a life ends
like grass tread flat
a scent at the border of consciousness

THEY’RE LYING

a desert of nondegradability
a desert of uselessness

in that i trust

in the desert lies a pyramid
in the pyramid lies a sarcophagus
in the sarcophagus lies an orb
WHICH is the foundation of all future life
WHICH is the new path to the necessary virginity

a shaft
my own shaft of longing
with my own shaft of loss

i’II wait for you by the elevator
