Yahoo! was started at Stanford University by Jerry Yang and David Filo in 1994 when these two Electrical Engineering graduate students created a directory website named “Jerry and David’s Guide to the World Wide Web.” Yahoo Inc. is now globally known for its Web portal, search engine, advertising, online mapping, video sharing, fantasy sports and its social media website. Yahoo itself claims it attracts more than half a billion consumers every month in more than 30 languages!

… that today is Ming Dynasty Day? In 1368, after driving the Mongols out of China, Zhu Yuanzhang proclaimed the Ming dynasty. As the new emperor Hongwu, he ruled for thirty years. During Hongwu’s reign, the Ming Dynasty was characterized by rapid and dramatic population growth, and living standards also greatly improved.

… that today is Nautilus Launch Day? The Nautilus, the first atomic-powered submarine, was launched in Groton, Connecticut, on this day in 1954. First Lady Mamie Eisenhower christened the vessel with a bottle of champagne. Trivia fans: Just before the first lady christened the boat, a shipyard worker high on a girder called out, “Hit it good and hard, Mrs. Eisenhower.”

… that today is the birthday of Grunge? In 1988, Nirvana recorded a ten-song demo tape with Jack Endino, the godfather of grunge. A producer heard the tape and offered to put out a Nirvana single. Trivia buffs: Kurt Cobain had many pets during his life including a pet rat he called Kitty, a cat named Melvin, and many turtles that he used to take care of.
