Vaishali Deshpande was a close associate of my beloved mother at Shabri Kanya Ashram run by Vanavasi Kalyan Ashram in Raipur.
My mother was a Hostel in-charge till her death and worked for the upliftment of girls from over 200 tribes from North East of India.
We did not live together. At 18, I wanted to be a Non-Sanyasi Lifeworker in North East for Vivekananda Kendra, KanyaKumari. And she wanted her only son to gain a better status than her or my father,
And she took Diksha from RamaKrishna Mission, Belur Math Swami Vireshwarananda and dedicated her own life with the Girl children of North East whose parents were putting 6 months old to 20 year old girls in the hostel /. school for studies as they feared for their life due to the Militancy in the region in 80’s and 90’s.
One of the girls who was always with my mother (Dony Gurung) later became a MD, She did her Post graduation in Yoga Medicine in Germany.
One of the habits of my mother was gifting and I picked it from her in corporate life. I became the Santa many times over and she gifted Gita/ Ramayan – literally thousands of copies.
We shared a common trait. Of storing sweetmeats, toffees, peanuts and other goodies like biscuits – she in her Almirah and those who were close to me in corporate life would search for them in my Table drawers.
It was nice gesture on part of Mrs. Vaishali Deshpande to write and give a snap shot of my mothers’ life. It feels proud to read it. Thank you Vaishali.
