Welcome to 3-2-1 Thursday,

Autumn is in full swing here in Ohio and the fall colors are starting to pop. Wherever you are today, I hope you’re enjoying some beauty as well.

Here are 3 ideas, 2 quotes, and 1 question to ponder this week.

“I’d estimate at least half of my frustrations with others are actually frustrations with myself for failing to set clear boundaries and stand by them.”

“Read books that are relevant to what you want to achieve and reading will never seem boring.”

“The fastest way to improve is to learn from others.

  • Read good books
  • Talk to people who have done it
  • Soak up the lessons of the past

Learn from the experiments history has already run and you can start the race halfway finished.”

Actress Viola Davis on handling criticism:

“I don’t have any time to stay up all night worrying about what someone who doesn’t love me has to say about me.”

Entrepreneur and investor Sam Altman on the importance of quality:

“All companies that grow really big do so in only one way: people recommend the product or service to other people. What this means is that if you want to be a great company some day, you have to eventually build something so good that people will recommend it to their friends—in fact, so good that they want to be the first one to recommend it to their friends for the implied good taste. No growth hack, brilliant marketing idea, or sales team can save you long term if you don’t have a sufficiently good product.”

Momentum is a double-edged sword. It can propel you to new heights or keep you locked into previous choices and old habits.

Where do I have healthy momentum right now? Where do I have unhealthy momentum?

word of the day

Part of speech: noun
Origin: Old English, late 16th century
1A small group of trees.
Examples of Copse in a sentence “The hikers decided to take shelter near a convenient copse.” “The plaza was beautiful around Christmas, especially the copse draped in twinkling lights.”

Two kinds of limbo

Two kinds of limbo

Uncomfortable limbo happens when we’re seeking firm footing and there isn’t any. The discomfort comes from not knowing, from our unlimited desire to get through it to the other side.

And comfortable limbo is a place

to hide. We lull ourselves into complacency, because the limbo of being in between feels safe, with no responsibilities.

Amazingly, two different people can experience the same limbo in totally different ways. It’s not the limbo that’s different, it’s us.

We like what we choose

We like what we choose

Not the other way around.

It feels safer to say that we’re born with talents and gifts, that we have a true calling, that we’re looking for what connects with our passion.

That’s not useful (because it means you spend a lot of time shopping around) but it’s also not true.

New research confirms that random choices lead to preferences, and then it follows that preferences lead to habits and habits lead us to become the person we somehow decide we were born to be.

If you had grown up somewhere else or some time else, there’s little doubt that you’d prefer something else. The things we think we need are simply the things we’re used to.

And if you like what you like simply because you have a pattern, that means that you might be able to like something else if you could develop new patterns.

In short: If we commit to loving what we do, we’re more likely to find engagement and satisfaction. And if what we do changes, we can choose to love that too.

Failories newsletter for startpreneurs. Worth subscribing.

👋 Hey Failories! It’s Nico over here.

Last week’s article on Y Combinator failed startups completely blew up. It went viral on Hacker News and received tons of shares on social networks. +25k users read it in three days.

Based on all the feedback we received, we’ve made some modifications. Firstly, we corrected some information which was wrong/not clear. Secondly, we removed the “Other startups” section as we decided we would only focus on the biggest failed startups. Finally, we added two new more failed startups stories (Airware and Homejoy).

Today I have two new interviews: a failed live streaming platform that went from 100k users and $1m raised to 0, and a successful SaaS for repair shops which is making $100k/mo.

This newsletter is sponsored by Starkflow.
INTERVIEWHow we went from $1M raised and 100k users to shut downZapstream was a social live streaming platform, which competed with Meerkat and Periscope. The startup raised $1m from angels and grew from 0 to 100k users. However, a combination of dwindling engagement, mismanagement of money, and the inability to fundraise further, led to their shut down.Read More +
