I have to share with you the deeply humbling news we’ve received today – the UN World Food Programme has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for 2020!
With this honour the committee are recognising the combined contributions of many, many people. From incredible WFP staff members who lay their lives on the line every day to bring food and assistance to nearly 100 million hungry people, to dedicated men and women around the world who make our life-saving work possible.
And, of course, that includes you.
This is an important day, because the global spotlight is turning on the 690 million people who go to bed hungry each day at a critical time. Conflict, climate shocks, and now a global pandemic are causing hunger to increase.
This prize is a reminder that food security, peace and stability go hand-in-hand. When we work to fight hunger, we also fight for peace.
Today is also an amazing day to recognise your incredible generosity, and your commitment to a more peaceful world, where everyone has enough to eat.
I hope you take a moment to be proud of what you’re helping us achieve. We’re certainly proud to have you on this journey with us.
With my sincere thanks and best wishes,
