Forbes – The Memo newsletter.

Forbes The Memo
Forbes The Memo

The Upside

When lockdown started, I made this newsletter a positive place. A bit of light relief from the uncertainty. And your feedback has been fantastic—hearing from you gives me a much needed boost—thank you.

I’m sure, like me, you’ve found some days harder than others over the past months. But I want to remind you, it’s OK to not be OK.

Today, I’m sharing something that’s been giving me a boost during these difficult times. Curated by my colleague Sofia Lotto PersioThe Upside is Forbes’ brand new newsletter for the lighter side of news.

Every Saturday, Sofia shares her favourite stories of kindness and compassion, guaranteed to leave you with a smile. Give it a try by signing up here.

PS, Thank you to Memo subscriber Inês in Lisbon who spotted a broken link in last week’s edition. Here’s the correct link to our story on the rich buying passports, properties and jets.

5 things we learned

Business is booming for plexiglass. This life-saving material is a big winner of the crisis with output up 300% as businesses, schools and even beaches rush to install protective screens. Plastic fantastic?

‘Bikepacking’ and Wuhan are this summer’s hottest travel trends. With hotels unlikely to reopen before the end of summer, camping is back en vogue. No car? No problem. And surprisingly, over in China, the ‘host city’ of the Coronavirus is topping the visitor charts.

Phone numbers may finally become history. Signal, the smart alternative to WhatsApp unveiled a new feature which could, in the very near future, make asking for someone’s phone number a thing of the past.

Pulling a ‘Corona sickie’ might land you jail time. FBI agents got involved after one company suspected an employee lied about testing positive for Covid-19. That ‘little lie’ reportedly cost the company $100,000. Ouch.

No more French kissing. No, not that kind of kissing! ‘La Bise’, the iconic French greeting, might not return after lockdown. Sounds far-fetched? It took almost 6 centuries for ‘La Bise’ to come back after the Black Death.

The good

There’s a ‘hospital’ for pot plants in Paris. Spare a thought for neglected pot plants in empty offices and apartments. One savvy French entrepreneur is collecting them, nursing them back to health and finding them new homes.

The bad

It’s still illegal to be LGBT+ in 70 countries. And trans rights took a major step backwards in Hungary this week as the country made it impossible to legally change gender. 2020 isn’t as progressive as we thought.

Today’s Must-Read
Naomi Osaka, the 22-year-old tennis ace, has racked up $37 million in earnings in the past year, more than any other woman in history. That includes Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova.

“For many people, Osaka’s introduction to the world was the memorable 2018 U.S. Open final versus Serena Williams, where Serena’s confrontation with the chair umpire overshadowed Naomi’s win,” notes SportsMoney Senior Editor Kurt Badenhausen. But tennis insiders had been buzzing about Osaka for a couple of years about her potential on and off the court.

She checks all the boxes for marketers: young, accomplished and multicultural in a global sport where the fan demographics are off the charts,” says Badenhausen.

Look to IMG, the dominant sports agency in tennis for decades. “They had huge success getting deals for clients like Maria Sharapova, who broke through at a young age; Li Na, who made history at age 29 as the first Asian-born person to win a grand slam;  and Kei Nishikori, who until 2018 was the most accomplished player in the history of the wealthy Japanese market.”

Osaka represents the most marketable aspects of each of them. Read more for the full story.
