Why People behave the way they do -Why people do what they do

In IMDR’s 1988 HR class Prof. Deven Dhanak used to refer to this statement “Why people behave the way they do “and used to talk about Chrys Argyris theories around them.

Over the years when I joined NHRDN I found the same question was relevant even in 1993.

When I reflect in my pre-retirement period and the discussions with HR thinkers – they were very quietly talking about HR Makeover or transformation and at the core of discussion this them would always be present.

I subscribe to a newsletter and I read this short article which I am quoting below:

People will only ever do something to

  1. the very best of their ability because they want to –
  2. because they choose to.(And
  3. people live to change –
  4. we just hate to be changed by others)

Exactly what people do depends on the

  • choices they believe that they have at that moment in time, which depends on their
  • own self-esteem and past experiences.

They then

  1. choose that which will move them fastest towards pleasure –
  2. what they do want – or
  3. fastest away from pain – what they don’t want.

Usually they choose a short term outcome instead of one further in the future.

So now you know – make use of this knowledge to the good of others and yourself.”
