… that today is Beard Tax Day? On this day in 1698, Russia’s Peter the Great imposed a tax on beards. At the time hairless necks and faces were all the rage in the Western World, so the Czar – who had a fondness for anything Westernized – ordered his subjects to lose their face fuzz. Eventually, he let up a little on that order and imposed an annual “beard tax” upon those who wanted to keep their facial hair. Trivia fans: Despite the fee’s widespread unpopularity, it remained in place until 1772, 47 years after Peter’s death!
