I joined NHRDN which is a Prime network of HR professionals in India 22 years ago as a Life Member to learn ” Why people behave the way they do?” And, Can the Performance and Employee life in an organisation predictable.
I first learnt Human and Human Resource and later Humane in those early years the learnings were about :
a. A system of thought that focuses on humans and their values, capacities, and worth.
b. Humanism : A cultural and intellectual movement of the Renaissance that emphasized human potential to attain excellence and promoted direct study of the literature, art, and civilization ofclassical Greece and Rome.
- The study of the humanities; learning in the liberal arts.
- Secular humanism.
And Concern with the interests, needs, and welfare of humans: “the newest flower on the vine of corporate humanism” (Savvy).
I understood that Humanism and HRD are two different things. While HRD needs to be Humane and by Humane I mean – you select well – so people perform well, they are treated well so you never have to fire them. They are trained and skilled and if and when they choose to leave – they have received a great amount of value addition to pursue their own path. But that is my humble opinion and many may differ.

Humanism comes from the Latin humanitas, which means “education that befits a civilized man.” This belief system or cultural movement bubbled up during the Renaissance, promoting classical Greek and Roman values like reason, justice and ethics instead of supernatural religious ideas. People who follow humanism are called humanists, and they’ve probably studied a lot of literature, philosophy and history.

The Key for success of a C Suite Member is in RETENTION and not ATTRITION.
The condition of retaining (keeping) something. “You may be able to memorize facts in the short-term, but how well is your retention of those facts over the long-term?”
“Successful companies need to foster a good working environment so that employee retention remains at a high level.”
I would, therefore, ask the C Suite members reading this to keep the HUMANE and RETENTION aspects in mind while speaking or listening about Humanism.
